As functional connectivity of the brain is a more transparent process due to recent technological innovations, understanding and analyzing scans have opened up a whole new array of treatment options.

At Neurotherapeutix, we take a detailed medical and psychiatric history, then create a detailed map of the brain where the problems reside. We determine what loci (locations) of the brain are poorly functioning and correlate it with very sophisticated software developed over many years. This, in turn, allows us to plan a treatment grid based on brain circuit (functional), wiring and realigning the target pathways with magnetic beams.

Brain Mapping Technology

This magnetic beam is delicately aimed at nodes of networks or regions of the brain which are functionally disconnected from the normal areas. Using brain mapping technology, we attempt to restore brain circuits to a healthier condition, and alleviate the underlying abnormalities.

Our brains are deeply complicated organs and allow us to integrate our lives with our internal and external environments. When our brain function is altered in a dramatic way our ability to process information may be diminished or impaired and can give rise to psychiatric disorders, pain syndromes, degenerative neurological diseases, and a host of other problems.

The theory of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is that through the use of these targeted beams there will be a re-correction and normalization of brain function. If electrical wiring is impaired or short-circuited through disease or a disordered process, it will lead to misfiring of delicate nerve cells, impairing our ability to enjoy our lives.

Rewiring the brain

Think of the electrical fuse box in your house and the frustration when wires and circuits are disrupted. Magnify that a millionfold and you can understand how these misfires cause behavioral and degenerative diseases.

What TMS will do is to untangle them and reattach these nerve pathways to normalize their function. This is commonly referred to as neuroplasticity and this technology catalyzes the healing process. We can safely and effectively treat a vast array of brain disorders that have failed conventional therapy virtually without side effects.

Our patients will be seated comfortably in a chair similar to dental chairs and fitted with a cap. A tracker (sensors) attached to a band is placed around your head. While you are sitting, two large television screens will show your brain map and the areas that are to be treated.

The navigation system works based on optical (infrared) tracking, assuring excellent accuracy. The accuracy of this optical navigation system is higher than other systems because the registration and real-time navigation are only dependent on the tracker and probe visibility to the infrared camera.

For you to become our patient you will be examined by our Board Certified psychiatrist who will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this course of therapy. Should you both agree that TMS is appropriate for you, we require a functional MRI and correlate the clinical symptoms with the areas of the brain that are either overactive or underactive.

A functional MRI is a radiological scan that shows how blood is flowing through the brain in real-time. If blood flow to a particular brain region is too high or low compared to normal it will be correlated to the clinical presentation. Areas of abnormal blood flow have been determined to represent poorly functioning regions and their associated dysfunctions.

These disturbances will be analyzed by our team and a treatment strategy formulated that is specifically tailored for each case. Every brain and every problem is unique and our treatment software will strategically target regions the size of a grain of rice.

The usual course of therapy ranges from 20 to 40 treatments. One should see improvement after several treatments as we constantly monitor our therapy. After the course of therapy is over, another functional MRI will allow us to determine if the therapy has provided the necessary brain changes we would anticipate.
